FAQs

The questions we hear most, answered plainly.

Joining

  • Who can join? Students aged 12 and up, anywhere in the world.
  • What if I'm under 16? You sign up with a parent or guardian's details, and your profile stays private until they approve it through the link we email them.
  • What if I'm under 12? You can't join yet. Come back when you turn 12.
  • Is it free? Yes — creating a profile and connecting with students is free.

Profiles and privacy

  • Who can see my profile? You choose: only you, connections only, signed-in members, or a shareable link. Under-18 profiles start as connections only, and under-16 profiles never show school, city, social handles or videos to people they aren't connected with.
  • Can I use a username or nickname? No. Everyone appears by their real full name — ScholarOut is a professional network, and your profile is a precursor to LinkedIn.
  • Can I delete my profile? Yes, at any time, from your own profile page. Everything — photos, videos, achievements, connections — is permanently erased.
  • Do you show ads or sell my data? No ads run currently, and we do not sell student data. If advertising is introduced, it must be tasteful, age-appropriate and relevant to students. We will update our policies before any related changes.

Scholarships and money

  • Are the scholarships real money? Campaigns currently accept pledges only. No payments are collected yet.
  • What happens when payments launch? Donors pay by card or PayPal and are charged immediately. ScholarOut keeps a 3% service fee, card and PayPal processing fees are paid by the donor on top of their gift, and the rest is paid directly to the student's school toward their tuition invoice.
  • Does a student have to reach their goal? No. Unlike some platforms, every dollar pledged counts — there's no all-or-nothing target.
  • Is ScholarOut a charity? No. ScholarOut is not a registered charity, and donations are not tax-deductible.

For parents

  • How do I approve my child's profile? Open the consent email we send to you (never to your child), enter your name as given at sign-up, confirm you're the parent or guardian and choose who can see the profile. You'll then get a private guardian link to change settings or withdraw consent at any time.
  • Can I see or remove my child's profile? Yes. Contact us at any time and we'll help — parents of under-16s can request removal whenever they wish.
  • What protects my child? Under-16 profiles stay private until you approve them, connections are mutual, we currently show no ads, we never sell data, and safety reports are prioritised above everything else. Read the full details on our Safety Centre page.
